A real example: a 40,000-page site had original content and real backlinks — yet less than a third of its pages were even indexed.
Problem
New pages weren't indexing for months. Old pages were quietly dropping out — no manual action, no quality issue.
Diagnosis
Server logs showed over 60% of Googlebot's crawl hits were wasted on faceted filter URLs and duplicate parameters.
Fix
Cut the sitemap from ~60,000 to ~40,200 real URLs, blocked low-value parameter paths, and cleaned internal linking.
Result (Week 12)
Indexed pages jumped from ~13,500 to 40,100. New content now indexes in 3-5 days, down from 8-12 weeks.
